Medium-fast bowler S M Shoaib scalped three wickets to help Hyderabad take a 27-run first innings lead on the third day of their Elite Group-A Ranji match against host Orissa at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack today.
In reply to Hyderabad`s competitive
first innings total of 296, Orissa folded up for 269 despite a captain`s knock of 80 by Shiv Sundar Das and his 86-run first-wicket partnership with Bikash Swarup Pati (37).
The visitors also made their position safe in the four-day match by reaching 56 for one in the second innings at the end of the day and there by increasing the lead to 83.
Playing only his sixth first class match, 20-year-old Shoaib clinched the crucial first innings lead by dismissing Orissa vice-captain P Jayachandra, who was proving himself a thorn in the opposition flesh.
Resuming at the overnight score of 150 for three, the hosts expected captain Das to carry on his goodwork with the bat and guide them past the Hyderabad total. But the former India Test opener, who had the opportunity to celebrate his 32nd birth day with a century, fell early in the day, adding only five runs to his overnight score of 75. His 172-ball knock, featuring 10 boundaries, ended in a run out.
After the exit of Das, Orissa tried their best to stay in the hunt for the lead thanks to modest contributions by Jayachandra (43), Rakesh Mohanty (28) and Sourav Sehgal (25). But the best effort eventually proved insufficient.
When the two sides were fighting hard for the lead, Hyderabad skipper Arjun Yadav also played a decisive role by making best use of his bowling and fielding resources.
Among other successful bowlers of Hyderabad, part-time off-spinner Amol Shinde bagged three wickets, while Orissa-born left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha picked up a brace.
After conceding the lead, the home team found some consolation by taking an early wicket in the visitors` second innings. But Tavi Teja and Rishi Raj denied Orissa further success by putting up 52 runs for the unfinished second wicket.
