Punjab fight to avoid innings defeat

An unbroken 115-run sixth wicket stand between Ankur Kakkar (77) and Uday Kaul (50) helped Punjab continue their fighting to avert defeat on the third day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Group-A Super League match against Orissa at the Railway ground in Bhubaneswar today. Needing 293 runs to avoid innings defeat, Punjab finished the day, making 256 for five. Earlier, they slumped to 141 for five after resuming at the overnight score of 59 for one. Former India Test medium pacer Debasish Mohanty threatened to run through the side with a haul of four for 50. But Kakkar and Kaul stemmed the rot, hitting a half-century each. Medium-pacer Basanta Mohanty, who had destroyed the Punjab batting on the first day bagging seven for 27, went wicketless in the second innings. Punjab still require 37 runs to make Orissa bat again in the second innings.
