Odisha u-25 team suffers third innings defeat

Odisha retained their place in the Elite Division of the C K Nayudu Trophy U-25 Tournament despite going down to host Tamil Nadu by an innings and 23 runs on the fourth and last day of their fourth and last Group-B match at Chennai on today.

The Odisha team, which earlier lost their first two matches Delhi and
Maharashtra but won the third against Jammu & Kashmir, finished fourth in the five-team group with six points. Maharashtra (20), Delhi (18) and Tamil Nadu (16) occupied the top three positions, while J&K finished last and were relegated to the Plate Division.

In the match against Tamil Nadu, Odisha rode on a majestic century by Shesdeep Patra to make a sizeable total of 293 in the first innings after electing to bat. Patra`s 194-ball knock of 124 included 20 boundaries and one six. But an unbeaten double century by V Maaruthi Raghav powered Tamil Nadu to a massive total of 493 for eight declared.

Needing 201 runs to avoid the innings defeat, Odisha were bowled out for 177 in the second innings. Skipper Bibhudutta Panda stood tall in the defeat, hitting a whirlwind 73 off 61 balls. His defiant knock was studded with five boundaries and eight sixes. Arabinda Singh was another Odisha batsman to make a descent score of 47.
