For Wahid Latif, a right-hand middle-order batsman who played two matches for Orissa under-22 team in the C K Nayudu Trophy in 1981-82, life was smooth till he started feeling pain in the back late last year. Despite treatment, the pain increased, making him almost immobile eventually. After a series of costly tests, Latif was detected to be suffering from bone marrow cancer.
Anybody in this situation would have been crestfallen and 48-year-old Latif was no different. But instead of seeking help, he has been suffering quietly at home in Cuttack. ``It was my bad luck that I fell victim to cancer. Why should I bother anybody for my misfortune,`` lamented Latif, a self-respecting person.
