Impressive bowling performances by Suman Mohanty and Ashutosh Das went in vain as Odisha suffered a 33-run defeat at the hands of host Jharkhand in their truncated last league match of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy East Zone Under-19 Cricket Tournament at JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi today.
The 50-over-a-side match was reduced to 26 overs due to rain. Put into bat, Jharkhand compiled a healthy total of 181 despite a four-wicket haul by off-spinner Mohanty and a hat-trick by medium pacer Das, who achieved the feat in the last over of the innings, dismissing Krishna Patel, Zeesan Ali and Prem Kumar. But the Odisha duo`s fine bowling efforts were overshadowed by Jharkhand opener Ishan Kishan, who smashed a 63-ball 88 with the help of 11 boundaries and three sixes.
In reply, Odisha were restricted to 148 for six. After opener Biswajit Bhuyan was dismissed for a blob, skipper Ashok Barik (46 off 44 balls) and wicket-keeper Rajesh Dhuper (38 off 41) stitched together 77 runs for the second-wicket to put the visitors in a good position.
But the fall of five wickets for 14 runs left them in deep trouble as they slumped from 78 for one to 92 for six. Zeesan Ali turned the table on Odisha, scalping three wickets for 19 runs. Though Sandeep Patnaik and Rajkishan Patel arrested the slump, putting on 56 runs for the unfinished seventh wicket, their efforts could not deny Jharkhand the victory and four points.
This was Odisha`s third defeat in four matches and they completed their league engagements with four points, which came through a 125-run win over Assam.
