Odisha booked Ranji Trophy last-eight berth for the sixth time, beating Uttar Pradesh by three wickets on the last day of their five-day pre-quarterfinal match at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack today. This was 43rd victory in a total of 186 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and their first win in two matches against Uttar Pradesh.
Dependable allrounder P Jayachandra, stumper Gautam Gopal, pace spearhead Debasis Mohanty, front-line batsmen Pravanjan Mullick, Shiv Sundar Das and BBCC Mohapatra made the victory possible for Orissa, putting up impressive performance.
Mohanty four wickets to help Orissa bowl out the Uttar Pradesh for 231 after the visitors won the toss and decided to bat. In reply, Orissa rode on an unbeaten 91 (182 balls, 11x4, 3x6) by Jayachandra and 62 by Gautam Gopal to muster a healthy total of 320. The duo gave Orissa the first-innings lead with a 110-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
After conceding a lead of 89 runs, Uttar Pradesh fought back to declare their second innings at 369 for nine. Mohanty picked up three wickets in the second innings to finish with a match haul of seven for 146. Gopal did a nice job behind the stumps, taking seven catches in the match.
Chasing a challenging total of 281 for victory, Orissa rode on a half-century each by Pravanjan Mullick (83), Shiv Sundar Das (74) and BBCC Mohapatra (56) to romp home with three wickets to spare. With this win, Orissa avenged the 10-wicket defeat they had suffered against UP in a super league match at Kanpur two years back.
