Rashmi Ranjan Parida hit a half-century and an unbeaten century to help Orissa draw their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group-B match against Punjab on the last day at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. However, Punjab gained one precious point by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Orissa drew blank.
Put into bat by Punjab captain Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Orissa rode on a half-century each by BBCC Mohapatra (56), Rashmi Ranjan Parida (56) and Sanjay Raul (72) to compile a sizeable total of 301. In reply, Punjab mustered 381 to take a first-innings lead of 80 runs. Among successful Orissa bowlers, Debasis Mohanty scalped four, while Sanjay Satpathy and Ajay Barik picked up three and two wickets respectively.
In their second innings, Orissa were going strong at 256 for six on the final day when the match ended in draw. Parida followed his first-innings fifty with an unbeaten 126 (241 balls, 19x4) in the second. He, in the process, passed 4,500 runs in first-class matches and 4,000 in Ranji Trophy matches.
Similarly, Shiv Sundar Das and Sanjay Raul passed 6,500 and 4,500 runs respectively in first-class matches. Middle-order batsman Subit Biswal made first-class debut in this match, replacing allrounder P Jayachandra in the Orissa team.
