Tamil Nadu rode a match haul of 11 wickets for 51 runs by Lakshmipathy Balaji to demolish Orissa by an innings and 36 runs on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group-B match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai today. This was overall 71st defeat, 36th by innings margin in 191 Ranji Trophy matches for Odisha and second defeat in three games against Tamil Nadu.
Put into bat by Tamil Nadu captain S Suresh, Orissa were bundled out for 122. Medium pacer Balaji destroyed the Orissa batting line-up, capturing five wickets for 25 runs. In reply, half-century each by Sridharan Sriram (94) and Hemang Badani (86) enabled Tamil Nadu muster a healthy total of 314.
Among Orissa bowlers, Ajay Barik, Bipin Singh, Sujan Mohanty and Sanjay Satpathy picked up two wickets each. Trailing by 192 runs in the first innings, Orissa were bowled out for 156 in the second innings to suffer back-to-back innings defeat.
Amidst the defeat, captain Rashmi Ranjan Parida and Pravanjan Mullick batted with courage in the second innings, scoring 61 and 35 runs respectively. Absence of Test opener Shiv Sundar Das and Debasis Mohanty hit Orissa hard in this match.
