Magnificent match-haul of 11 wickets for 111 runs by debutant medium-pacer Deepak Kumar Mangaraj powered host Orissa to an 180-run win over Himachal Pradesh on the last day of four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Group-B match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.
This was overall 45th win in 196 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and first victory in their only match against Himachal Pradesh. Orissa clinched the thumping win, thanks to the superb bowling of Mangaraj and supporting roles played by stumper-batsman Sukhbinder Singh, Sanjay Satpathy, Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Shiv Sundar Das and Subrat Behera.
Put to bat by Himachal captain Sangram Singh, Orissa compiled a respectable total of 246. Shiv Sundar Das (28) and Subrat Behera (38) gave the home team a notable start with a partnership of 64 runs. But Orissa failed to muster a bit total as wickets fell in regular intervals. However, a 91-ball 49 by top scorer Sukhbinder Singh and useful contributions by Pravanjan Mullick (27), Sanjay Satpathy (26) and Rashmi Ranjan Parida (25) proved the total to be substantial.
In reply, Himachal Pradesh were bundled out for 116 with Mangaraj seven wickets for 42 runs and Orissa secured a sizeable lead of 130 runs. Orissa further consolidated their position by declaring the second innings at 309 for eight.
All the Orissa batsmen who performed well in the first innings, also did so in the second essay. Rashmi Ranjan Parida hit the only half-century for the home team with a 98-ball 50. He was well complimented by Das (48), Satpathy (46), Subrat Behera (44), Sukhbinder Singh (39) and Pravnjan Mullick (2).
Chasing a stiff tarter of 440, Himachal Pradesh fought well before getting all out for 259. Mangaraj continued to shine this match, bagging four wickets for 69 runs. For Himachal, captain Sangram Singh, Sandeep Sharma and Ajaymannu Bharadwaj hit a half-century each.
