Orissa post emphatic win in 200th Ranji Match

Impressive century by Pravanjan Mullick and a half-century each by P Jayachandra and Debasis Mohanty guided Orissa to an eight-wicket win over Jammu & Kashmir on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Group-A match at Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar today. This was overall 46th win in 200th Ranji Trophy match for Odisha and their second win in as many matches against Jammu & Kashmir.

Put into bat by J&K captain Dhruv Mahajan, Orissa were in a spot of bother, losing four wickets for 74 runs. However, impressive knocks by Pravanjan Mullick (111, 214 balls, 12x4), Jayachandra (59, 54 balls, 9x4, 1x6) and Debasis Mohanty (51, 84 balls, 6x4, 1x6) enabled them o muster a healthy total of 325.

In reply, host J&K squandered a sound start to be bowled out for 123 with Deepak Mangaraj and Sanjay Satpathy bagging four and three wickets respectively for Orissa. Forced to follow on after conceding a first-innings lead of 202 runs, J&K fought back to compile a much better second-innings total of 299. Among Orissa bowlers, Satpathy and Niranjan Behera picked up three wickets each.

Kavaljit Singh (94), captain Mahajan (68) and stumper Arshad Bhatt (53*) notched up a half-century each for the home team in the second innings. But these knocks could not save them from the defeat. Chasing a modest target of 98, Orissa romped home, losing two wickets in the process.

Rashmi Ranjan Parida and Niranjan Behera steered Orissa over the finish line with unbeaten knocks of 46 and 23 respectively. The four-day match was extended by a day as the second-day proceedings were postponed due to the visit of Prime Minister of India to Jammu.
