Ranji Trophy: Dhoni hundred destroys Orissa

Sterling performance by stumper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni propelled Jharkhand a six-wicket win over Orissa on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Group-A match at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur today. This was overall 74rd defeat in 203 first-class (all Ranji Trophy) matches for Odisha and their first defeat in only match against Jharkhand.

Team Orissa, led by Debasis Mohanty for the first time and featuring debutants Rakesh Mohanty and Sovan Deb, lost half of the battle as they were bundled out for 110 after put into bat by Jharkhand skipper Sumit Panda. Medium-pacer Shiv Shankar Rao was most successful Jharkhand bowler, bagging six wickets for 28 runs.

In reply, Jharkhand rode on a career-best 128 (128 balls, 18x4, 1x6) by Dhoni to compile a challenging total of 268. Among Orissa bowlers, Debasis Mohanty captured four wickets for 63 runs, while Deepak Mangaraj and P Jayachandra picked up three each, giving away 78 and 51 runs respectively.

After conceding a lead of 158 runs in the first innings, Orissa made some recovery by amassing a second-innings total of 294. This was possible because of a half-century each by Shiv Sundar Das (77) and Pravanjan Mullick (60). With this knock, Mullick passed 4000 runs in Ranji Trophy matches. Rao once again did maximum damage to Orissa batting line-up, bagging four wickets for 48 runs and a match haul of 10 for 76.

Despite the fight back, Orissa could not save themselves from defeat. Jharkhand clinched victory by overhauling a target of 137 runs, losing four second-innings wickets in the process. The home team, of course, faced a mini collapse, losing three wickets for 24 runs before Rajiv Kumar wrapped it up with an unbeaten knock of 61. Debasis Mohanty reached 250 first-class wickets by dismissing Dhoni in the second innings.
