Superb batting by Pravanjan Mullick and Rashmi Ranjan Parida; and excellent bowling by captain Debasis Mohanty powered Orissa to a 10-wicket win over Saurashtra on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Group-A match at Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground in Rajkot today.
This was overall 47th win in 204 first-class (all Ranji Trophy) matches for Odisha and their second win in three matches against Saurashtra. Mohanty scalped six wickets as Orissa dismissed host Saurashtra, who chose to bat after winning the toss, for 160. Mohanty was well supported by Deepak Mangaraj with two wickets to his name.
In reply, Orissa compiled a healthy total of 349 to take sizeable lead of 189 runs. Intially, the visitors were in deep trouble, losing four wickets for 50 runs. But a solid century by Pravanjan Mullick (123, 203 balls, 17x4, 1x6) and 96 (229 balls, 13x4) by Rashim Ranjan Parida, helped them fight back into a position of strength.
The duo was associated in a partnership of 188 runs for the fifth wicket. Among Saurashtra bowlers, Sandeep Jobanputra stood out, bagging six wickets for 126 runs. In the second innings, a defiant knock of 77 by captain Jaydev Shah enabled Saurashtra make modest total of 245.
Mohanty claimed three wickets in the second innings to finish with a match-haul of nine for 91 runs, while Mangaraj chipped in with three for 76. Chasing an easy target of 57 runs, Orissa romped home without losing any wicket, thanks to an unbeaten 42 by Shiv Sundar Das.
