India topped the medals tally for the first time in the history of Asian Athletics Championships, bagging a total of 29 medals in the 22nd edition of the continental event, which concluded at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. The 29 medals featured 12 gold, 5 silver and 12 bronze. China finished as runners-up with 20 medals that included 8 gold.
India secured five gold, one silver and three bronze medals on the final day. World junior javelin champion Neeraj Chopra lived up to his top billing, capturing gold with new meet record of 85.23m in his last attempt. Indians also claimed two gold medals in relay events and one each in mens 5000m and womens heptathlon.
Host Odisha bagged another bronze medal through Purnima Hembram, who finished third in womens heptathlon with a total of 5798 points. She had also secured heptathlon bronze in the 2015 Asian Championships. Swapna Barman gave India the gold medal, aggregating of 5942 points.
