Tokyo Paralympics: Avani, Sumit bag gold for India

It was a glorious Monday for India with the country winning five medals in a day at the 16th Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo today. The fived medals featured two gold, two silver and one bronze. With the five medals today, India jumped to the 26th position in the medal tally with a total of seven medals. China led the tally with 54 gold, 35 silver and 30 bronze for a total of 119 medals.

Avani Lakhera became the first Indian woman in history to win a Paralympic gold medal for the country, while Sumit Antil captured the other gold with World Record in the mens javelin throw (F64 category).

Devendera Jhanjharia and compatriot Sundar Singh Gurjar pocketed silver and bronze respectively also in mens javelin throw, albeit in F46 category. The other silver medal of the day for India was bagged by Yogesh Kathuniya in mens discus throw (F56 category).
