Odisha U-19 men won the gold medal in the 2nd Hockey India Junior East Zone Championships, defeating Jharkhand 2-0 in the final at Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre in Kolkata today. But Odisha U-19 women team settled for the bronze medal, edging out Manipur 4-3 in shootout after play in the regulation time of the third/fourth-place match ended in a goalless draw at the same venue earlier today.
Odisha junior men qualified for the final by winning all of their five league matches emphatically. Led by Adrohit Ekka, Odisha junior men beat Assam 13-0, Bengal 7-2, Manipur 7-0, Jharkhand 2-0 and Bihar 5-2. Odisha forward Deepak Pradhan emerged as the top scorer of the tournament with eight goals to his name.
Odisha junior women failed to reach the final as they finished third at the league stage, winning three matches and losing two. Captained by Drupati Naik, Odisha started their campaign with three wins in a row, trouncing Assam 17-0, Manipur 5-0 and Bihar 11-0.
