Lady luck smiled on host Odisha as they not only escaped from the jaws of a embarrassing defeat but also gained three points by virtue of taking a slender two-run first-innings lead against Jammu & Kashmir in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group-A match, which ended in an exciting draw at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.
Chasing a daunting target of 269 for victory on the fourth and final day, Odisha tottered at 29 four before a valiant unbeaten half-century by Sandeep Pattanaik helped them draw the match by the skin of their teeth, making 112 for eight off 80.4 overs in the second innings. Despite being a dominant side, Jammu & Kashmir settled with one point.
Odisha captain Govinda Poddar played an instrumental role in gaining the first-innings lead for the home team. His unbeaten 133 enabled Odisha muster a total of 272, in reply to 270 by Jammu & Kashmir, who elected to bat first after winning the toss. This was the ninth century in First-Class cricket for Poddar, who hit 11 fours and four sixes in his 201-ball unbeaten knock.
