Odisha boy Sattwik Swain made the State proud by clinching the title in the open category of the 38th National Under-9 Chess Championship, which was held at Pragyanam School in Gurugram, Haryana from 15 to 21 June 2025. This was the maiden National title for Sattwik, who has the credit of winning two international medals so far.
Student of Chandrasekharpur DAV Public School, Bhubaneswar, Sattwik scored 10 points in the 11-round competition. He won nine games and drew two. Among other Odisha players in open category, Siddhartha Mallick (7 points) and Advik Aditya Swain (6 points) finished 42nd and 107th respectively.
In the girls category, Odisha players Dibya Dristi Satapathy (5.5 points), Yashasree Swain (5 points) and Aditi Moharana (4.5 points) settled with 96th, 116th and 122nd positions respectively.
Sattwik trains at Kings Chess Academy, Bhubaneswar, under the guidance of coach Biswajit Ray. Last year, he won the bronze medal in the U-8 open category of the FIDE Chess World Cup in Batumi, Georgia and the silver medal also in the U-8 open section of the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy.
