Orissa dream run in Ranji Trophy ends in semifinals

The best-ever campaign of Orissa in Ranji Trophy came to a sad end as they bowed to Baroda on first-innings lead on the last day of their semifinal match, which ended in a draw at GSFC Ground in Vadodara today. The 288-run first-innings lead carried Baroda to the final, while Orissa bowed out.

Baroda wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia was the star of the match, hitting a century in the first-innings, half-century in the second and effecting four dismissals behind the stumps. Opting to bat, Baroda rode on a career-best knock of 181 by Mongia and half-century each by captain Jacob Martin, Tushar Arothe and Satyajit Parab to compile a massive total of 568.

Among Orissa bowlers, Debasis Mohanty and Sanjay Raul captured three wickets each, while Pravanjan Mullick picked up two. In reply, Orissa were bowled out for 280. Rashmi Ranjan Parida was the top scorer for Orissa with a 144-ball 94 (17x4). He compiled 116 runs for the second-wicket stand with captain Shiv Sundar Das, who slammed 98-ball 54 (11x4). P Jayachandra (48) and Sanjay Satpathy (30) were other notable scorers for Orissa.

Despite taking a big first-innings lead Baroda did not enforce follow-on and added another 409 runs before being all out in the second innings. Raul picked up another three wickets in the second innings to emerge as the most successful Orissa bowler.

With an overall lead of 697 runs, Baroda were licking their lips for an outright win. But Orissa fought back to draw the match, making 361 for five in the second innings at stumps on the final day. Pravanan Mulllick spoiled the victory hope of Baroda, hitting an unbeaten 131. He was well supported by Rashmi Ranjan Parida and P Jayachandra with knocks of 71 and 82 respectively. Orissa dropped around 10 catches and that cost the team dear.
