Ranji Trophy: Orissa inflict innings defeat on Tripura

Magnificent feat of four wickets in five balls by Debasis Mohanty and a century by Pravanjan Mullick helped Orissa trounce Tripura by an innings and 127 runs on the third day of their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Bhawanipatna (Kalahandi) today.

This was overall 40th win, 19th by an innings in a total of 182 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and 17th win, 12th by an innings in 17 matches against Tripura. For the record Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium became the 12th venue in Orissa to stage a first-class match.

BBCC Mohapatra and Yashpal Mohanty returned to the Orissa team and replaced Shiv Sundar Das, who went for National duty, and Suresh Kumar. Put into bat by Orissa captain Sanjay Raul, Tripura were bowled out for 152, losing last nine wickets for 55 runs.

Mohanty turned the tables on Tripura, capturing four wickets in five balls. He dismissed Timir Chanda, Chetan Sachdev, Subal Chowdhury and Rajib Dutta in the second, third, fifth and sixth ball of the 44th over without conceding any run. Tripura lost these four wickets at the same score of 106.

In reply, Orissa accumulated a formidable total of 472 thanks to a 184-ball knock of 109 (12x4, 2x6) by Mullick and a half-century each by BBCC Mohapatra (69), Rashmi Ranjan Parida (94) and P Jayachandra (68). Besides, Raul and Mohanty contributed 41 and 32 respectively.

Forced to follow on after conceding a first-innings lead of 320 runs, Tripura folded up for 193 in the second innings and suffered the innings defeat. Left-arm spinner Jagannath Das was most successful Orissa bower, taking three wickets for 48 runs. Raul and Mohanty reached personal milestones in this match, passing 3000 runs and 100 wickets respectively in Ranji Trophy.
