Barik hat-tricks as Orissa maul Assam by record margin

Cricketers presented Orissa with a lovely New-Year gift, scripting a record 429-run win over Assam on the last day of their four-day East Zone match at Permit Ground in Balasore today. This was the largest margin of victory for Orissa by runs, bettering the previous record of the 420-run win against Jammu & Kashmir at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack earlier in March this year.

Overall, this was the 42nd win in a total of 184 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and 19th win in 46 matches against Assam. Orissa pace bowler Ajay Barik turned out to be the biggest star of the match with a splendid hat-trick. He clinched the feat, dismissing Assam batsmen Bachan Singh, Gokulakrishnan, Sukhvinder Singh in successive balls in the second innings.

Barik, thus, became the second Orissa bowler to bag a hat-trick in first-class matches. Sourajit Mohapatra, the first to from Orissa to achieve the feat, did it against Tripura at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack in the season 1987-88.

While Barik provided the finishing touch to the memorable win, the platform for the same was set up mainly by captain Sanjay Raul, Debasis Mohanty, Sanjay Satpathy, Rashmi Ranjan Parida and P Jayachandra.

Raul was undoubtedly the best batsman of the match, top-scoring in both the innings with 60 (109 balls, 11x4) in the first and 162 (276 balls, 20x4) in the second. He was also involved in a match-winning partnership of 247 runs for the third-wicket with Rashmi Ranjan Parida in the second innings.

Parida maintained his reputation as one-of-best-batsmen of Orissa, slamming 117 (281 balls, 13x4) in the second innings. Among bowlers, who played praise-worth roles in the memorable Orissa win, offie Sanjay Satpathy and Debasis Mohanty pocketed a total of eight and seven wickets respectivey. P Jayachandra lived upto his reputation as the most consistent Orissa player, hitting an unbeaten half-century in the second innings.
