Orissa enjoy edge over Gujarat in drawn Ranji game

Orissa secured one point by taking first-innings lead against host Gujarat in their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group-B match, which ended in a draw on the last day at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad today. Authoritative display of batting enabled Orissa gained the valuable point.

Opting to bat after captain Rashmi Ranjan Parida won the toss, Orissa rode on a century each by BBCC Mohapatra, skipper Parida, Sanjay Raul and a half-century apiece by Shiv Sundar Das (60) and Pravanjan Mullick (61) to declare their first innings at 589 for five.

Mohapatra hit a career best 175 (224 balls, 23x4, 5x6), while Parida and Raul slammed 112 (210 balls, 15x4) and unbeaten 128 (228 balls, 8x4) respectively. Mohapatra and Das gave Orissa a solid start with a 174-run partnership for the opening wicket. Mohapatra added another 103 for the second-wicket stand with Parida, who stitched together 177 runs for the third-wicket partnership with Raul.
