Orissa rode on a dazzling knock of 141 by Shiv Sundar Das to draw their four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Group-A match against Kerala on the last day at Fort Maidan in Palakkad today. However, Orissa secured two points by taking first-innings lead, while host Kerala drew blank.
Opting to bat after Sunil Oasis won the toss, Kerala compiled a healthy total of 324, thanks to a half-century each by Sreekumar Nair, V Jagadeesh, Ajay Kudua and K Chandrashekara. Among Orissa bowlers, Debasis Mohanty was most successful wth four wickets for 40 runs, while new captain Niranjan Behera bagged a career-best three for 19.
In reply, Orissa mustered 334 to take a slender lead of 10 runs. The visitors could have taken a much bigger lead had they not collapsed after formidable start. Das (141, 318 balls, 16x4) and Subrat Behera (60, 172 balls, 6x4) put Orissa in a strong position, compiling 152 runs for the opening wicket.
Das further consolidated the innings, stitching together 139 runs for the second wicket with Rashmi Ranjan Parida (69, 152 balls, 10x4). During his majestic knock, Das passed 4,000 run in Ranji Trophy matches and 8,000 runs in First-Class matches. But from 291 for one, Orissa suffered a collapse, losing nine wickets for 43 runs.
In their second innings, Kerala declared at 149 for eight to set a target of 140 for Orissa to win the match. But there was not enough time for the visitors to chase down the target. When the match ended in a draw, Orissa were 47 for three in their second innings. Orissa wicket-keeper Priyabrata Pradhan made his first-class debut in this match.
