Notwithstanding a defiant century by P Jayachandra and a half-century by Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Orissa lost to Himachal Pradesh by an innings and 43 runs on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Group-A match at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Ground in Dharamsala today.
This was overall 73rd defeat and 37th by innings margin in 202 first-class (all Ranji Trophy) matches for Odisha. This was also the first defeat in two matches for Orissa against Himachal Pradesh. Poor batting in the first innings cost Orissa dear in this match.
Opting to bat after captain Sandeep Sharma won the toss, host Himachal Pradesh rode on a century by Sangram Singh and a half-century each by Ajay Bharadwaj and Virender Sharma to raise an imposing total of 425. Debasis Mohanty was most successful Orissa bowler, taking four wickets for 86 runs.
In reply, Orissa were bundled out for a paltry 80 with only three batsmen able to reach double figures. Forced to follow on after conceding a first-innings lead of 345 runs, Orissa put up courageous performance in the second innings, thanks to a career-best knock of 130 (242 balls, 13x4) by Jayachandra and a supporting 60 (154 balls, 8x4) by Parida.
But the valiant efforts of Jayachandra and Parida, who stitched together a partnership of 106 runs for the third wicket, Orissa were bowled out for 302 to suffer the innings defeat. Ashok Thakur was most successful bowler for Himachal Pradesh, bagging four wickets in each innings.
