Hockey: Indian men clinch Asiad gold, Olympic berth

Indian men hockey team won the gold medal at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, trouncing defending champions Japan 5-1 in the final today. The Men in Blue also confirmed their spot for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This is fourth gold medal for India in mens field hockey at the Asian Games. India had previously won the gold medal in 1966, 1998 and 2014.

Hockey India announced a prize of Rs 5 lakh for each player of the Indian team and Rs 2.50 lakh each for the support staff. Odisha Government, the spornsors of the Indian hockey teams, also announced a cash award of Rs 5 lakh each for players and support staff of the victorious team.

Asserting complete supremacy in the entire tournament, India won all the seven matches they played and scored a total of 68 goals. Odisha defender Amit Rohidas was part of the 18-member Indian mens team, which was led by drag-flick ace Harmanpreet Singh. Olympian Rohidas scored a goal each in five matches.
