This is the fourth bronze and seventh overall medal for India in women field hockey at the Asian Games. Earlier Indian women had won one gold in 1982, two silver in 1998 and 2018, and three bronze in 1986, 2006 and 2014.
India played the bronze medal match after suffering a 4-0 drubbing in the semifinals against China. Led by goalkeeper Savita Punia, Indian women qualified for the semifinals, finishing at the top of Pool A with three wins and one draw.
In their four pool league matches, India trounced Singapore 13-0, Malaysia 6-0, Hong Kong China 13-0 and drew with Korea 1-1. Odisha defender Deep Grace Ekka was the vice-captain of the Indian team. She scored four goals in six matches that India played in the Hangzhou Asian Games. With these six matches, her total international caps became 261.
