Indian script history, qualify for AFC Women Asian Cup 2026

Indian senior women football team, featuring Odisha forward Pyari Xaxa, created history by ensuring their maiden qualification for the AFC Womens Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia in March 2026. The Blue Tigresses achieved success by emerging Group-B champions with a 2-1 win over host Thailand in their fourth and last match at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai, Thailand today.

Sangita Basfore was the star of the memorable victory, scoring both the goals for India against higher-ranked Thailand. Indian women won all four of their matches in AFC Womens Asian Cup Qualifiers 2025 to emerge Group-B toppers with 12 points. In their first three games, India beat Mongolia 13-0, Timor-Leste 4-0 and Iraq 5-0.

The last appearance of India at the continental showpiece came in 2003, at a time when there were no qualifiers. They participated again in 2022 as hosts but were forced to withdraw due to a COVID outbreak. Womens Asian Cup will also serve as a qualifier for the FIFA Womens World Cup 2027 to be held in Brazil.
