Ranji Trophy: Odisha fall flat at first hurdle

After putting up a strong fight on the opening day, host Odisha struggled for the remaining three day to suffer a seven-wicket defeat against Baroda in their four-day Ranji Trophy opening Elite Group-A match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. The emphatic victory fetched Baroda six points, while Odisha drew blank.

Opting to bat, Odisha were in deep trouble, losing four wickets for 49 runs. Captain Subhranshu Senapati and Rajesh Dhuper steadied the innings with a 156-run partnership for the fifth wicket as Odisha ended the opening day at 205 for five.

But Odisha started losing its grip over the match from the second day as they were bowled for 271, losing their remaining five wickets for 21 runs. Both Senapati and Dhuper scored a half-century each, while the latter missed his century by six runs.

In reply, Baroda rode on a century each by Shivalik Sharma and Mitesh Patel to declare their first innings at 413 for seven, and took a lead of 142 runs. In the second innings, Odisha folded up for 174, leaving a small target of 33 runs for the opposition to win the match.
