Manual therapy works wonders for injuries

Shamim Qureshi is a lensman, suffering shoulder pain for several years because of carrying a heavy camera bag everyday to collect visuals for his news paper. He tried all remedial measures he could find, but the pain just refused to subside. But while covering a workshop on `Sports injury and manual therapy’ at Utkal Karate School in Bhubaneswar, Qureshi received free treatment from eminent manual therapist Professor Umasankar Mohanty. The 15-minute session, featuring manual manipulation of shoulder joints, muscles and taping relieved 50 per cent of his pain. ``I am surprised. The treatment worked wonders,’’ admitted lensman. Qureshi was one of many people, including sportspersons and mediamen, who experienced similar benefits during the day-long workshop. But Professor Mohanty made it clear that no miracle was involved in this method of treatment. ``Manual therapy a free-hand manipulation to reset, realign and rehabilitate injured joints, muscles and ligaments,’’ he defined. ``Manual therapy and taping provides quick recovery. It is also less expensive,’’ claimed the Mangalore-based and Orissa-born professor, who is also the president of Manual Therapy Foundation of India (MTFI). ``But manual therapy can not heal broken bones or infections,’’ he pointed out. Speaking on sports injuries, Professor Mohanty said 80 per cent of these injuries involve shoulder, knee, ankle and spine. ``These injuries can be healed by manually resetting or realigning the related joints, muscles and ligaments,’’ he explained. Organised jointly by MTFI, Utkal Karate School and Orisports.com, the workshop was earlier inaugurated by Prasanna Kumar Pradhan, the new head of the State Directorate of Sports and Youth Services. Leading orthopedic surgeons Dr P C Dey, Dr R N Mohanty, Utkal Karate School secretary Hari Prasad Pattanayak, woman powerlifting international Ranu Mohanty and good number of sportspersons as well as students of physiotherapy were present on the occasion. A team of professional physiotherapists including Dr Debasis Mohapatra, Dr Prem Ranjan Ojha and Dr B N Pani assisted Professor Mohanty for the successful conduct of the workshop.
