Ranji Trophy: Orissa gather 2 points against Goa

Orissa gathered two points by taking first-innings lead against Goa in their four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Group-A match, which ended in a draw on the final day at Dr Rajendra Prasad Stadium in Margao today. The highlight of the match was a century by Orissa batsman Pravanjan Mullick, who passed 4500 first-class runs in the process.

Orissa allrounder Paresh Patel and pace bowler Sukanta Khatua made first-class debut in this match. Among other notable Orissa performers, captain Debasis Mohanty claimed four wickets in the first innings, while Rashmi Ranjan Parida and Niranjan Behera hit a half-century each.

Opting to bat, Goa rode on a fine knock of 97 by captain Mandar Phadke to make respectable total of 235. In reply, Orissa compiled 333 to take a lead of 98 runs. Odisha got off to a horrible start, losing the wicket of star batsman Shiv Sundar Das for a blob.

But the century by Mullick (118, 246b, 14x4) and half-century each by Parida (52, 159b, 7x4) and Behera (68, 185b, 9x4, 1x6) enabled them to muster the healthy total. Parida, in the process, passed 5000 runs in Ranji Trophy and 5500 runs in first-class matches.

After conceding the first-innings lead, Goa bounced back into the match and forced Orissa settle for the draw. The hosts were 319 for five in the second innings when the match came to an end. Nikhil Haldipur and Saheel Dhuri hit a century each for Goa in the second innings.
